Prince of Orange Willem de Zwijger aka William the Silent is shot dead by Burgundian Catholic Balthasar Gérard at the age of 51 in Prinsenhof, Delft, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands.

King of Spain Philip II offered a reward of 25,000 crowns to anyone who killed William, calling him a "pest on the whole of Christianity and the enemy of the human race". It was the first assassination by use of a handgun. Gérard was caught before he could escape Delft and was imprisoned. Gérard was tortured before his trial on 13 July, where he was sentenced to an execution brutal even by the standards of that time. The magistrates decreed that the right hand of Gérard should be burned off with a red-hot iron, that his flesh should be torn from his bones with pincers in six different places, that he should be quartered and disembowelled alive, that his heart should be torn from his chest and flung in his face and that finally his head should be cut off.

19-year-old Arthur Jean Nicolas Rimbaud is shot by poet Paul Verlaine in A la Ville de Courtrai, Rue des Brasseurs 1, Brussel, Brabant, Belgium.

At 9am Verlaine went to No. 11 of the Galerie de la Reine to obtain a weapon and ammunition from the gunsmith Montigny. In an English tavern located at No. 7 rue des Chartreux, he conscientiously closed a few glasses of absinthe, before finding Rimbaud at the hotel on rue des Brasseurs, where he exhibited his loaded weapon. Around noon, the two friends went to empty a few chopines at the Maison des Brasseurs located in Grand-Place and then returned to their homes. Rimbaud his decision to leave Verlaine was inevitable. Exasperated by such determination Verlaine locked the door of the room and shot at close range at Rimbaud, whom he injured his left wrist.

Multiple murderer Henry Perry aka Beckett, the Lodger from Hell is executed by hanging by John Ellis at the age of 38 in HM Prison Pentonville, Caledonian Road, London, Islington, Greater London, United Kingdom.

Perry murdered 48-year-old Walter Cornish, his 43-year-old wife Alice and their two daughters 15-year-old Alice and 6-year-old Marie at 13 Stukeley Road, Forest Gate, London on 28 April 1919.

Baba was communicating first by use of chalk and slate, then by an alphabet board and later by self-styled hand gestures. In January 1927 he gave up writing with pen or pencil also.

Murderer Frank Rascon is executed by the gas chamber at the age of 26 in Arizona State Prison Complex, 1305 E Butte Avenue, Florence, Arizona, United States.

When the gas chamber was cleared of gas Rascon's wife Ramona threw herself upon his body and kissed his lips. She became seriously ill from the cyanide contamination on her mouth.

A ransom note was received, demanding $17 million in exchange for Getty's safe return. When that ransom message arrived, some family members suspected the kidnapping was merely a ploy by the rebellious youngster as he had frequently joked about staging his own kidnapping to extract money from his frugal grandfather.

Approximately six tonnes of chemicals including the poisonous TCDD are released during an industrial accident in ICMESA Plant, Seveso, Lombardia, Italy.

Within days a total of 3.300 animals, mostly poultry and rabbits, were found dead. 1.600 people of all ages had been examined and 447 were found to suffer from skin lesions or chloracne.

42-year-old Maureen Long is attacked with a hammer by serial killer Peter Sutcliffe aka The Yorkshire Ripper in Bowling Back Lane, Bradford, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Long was discovered at 8:30 in the morning when two women walking near the waste ground heard her feeble cries, which they first thought sounded like a baby whimpering. Her girdle, pants and tights had been pulled down. She had suffered one blow to the back of the head and stab wounds to her chest, stomach, and back, including one slashing stab wound from her breasts to below her navel.

26-year-old Serial killer David Richard Berkowitz aka Son of Sam is attacked with a razor, almost cutting his throat, by an unidentified fellow-inmate in Attica Prison, Attica, New York, United States.

Berkowitz refused to identify the person(s) who had attacked him with a knife but suggested that the act was directed by the cult he once belonged to. He bears a permanent scar from the wound that took 56 stitches to close.

Illarionov's body was found in a cornfield on 12 August.

Miss Hungary 1985 Csilla Andrea Molnár commits suicide by an overdose of Lidocaine at the age of 17 in Fonyód, Dél-Dunántúl, Hungary.

Molnár complained of being harassed by the public saying, "I don't know whether I can bear this, everybody is harassing me. They ask: Where and from whom did you get those beautiful clothes? Who helped you? Do you or your father have special connections with the jury? And so on." She was the first Hungarian beauty queen after a 50-year interval.
