The five fatalities were 27-year-old Joyce Sellers and her 3-year-old daughter Debbie, 18-year-old Glenda Carter, 18-year-old Mary Olsen and 19-year-old Carol Farmer.

After three days of deliberation, the jury failed to reach to decision, and the judge dismissed the case.

Peoples was in possession of a backpack that had a stolen badge and identification card belonging to an Alameda County sheriff's deputy. Missing was the deputy's .40-caliber Glock that was later found buried in a muddy field. The gun was linked to four deaths that occurred over a two-week period. A map found in Peoples' home pinpointed the known attacks as well as future targets.
