Bank robber John Herbert Dillinger is supposedly shot dead by Melvin Purvis at the age of 31 in Biograph Theater, 2433 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, United States.

Dillinger was struck four times, with two bullets grazing him, one cut a superficial hole in his right side, and the fatal shot - which entered Dillinger through the back of his neck, severed his spinal cord and tore through his brain before exiting out the front of his head just under his right eye, severing two sets of veins and arteries. An ambulance was summoned though it was clear Dillinger had quickly died from his gunshot wounds. At 10:50 p.m. Dillinger was pronounced dead at Alexian Brothers Hospital. He died without saying a word. There were reports of people dipping their handkerchiefs and skirts into the blood pool that had formed.In 'The Dillinger Dossier' author Jay Robert Nash maintains that Dillinger escaped death at the Biograph Theater simply by not being there. In his stead was a 'Jimmy Lawrence', a local Chicago petty criminal whose appearance was similar to Dillinger's.

31-year-old Serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer aka The Milwaukee Cannibal is arrested in Oxford Apartments #213, 924 25th North Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States.

Two Milwaukee police officers were flagged down by Tracy Edwards at the corner of North 25th Street. The officers noted Edwards had a handcuff attached to his wrist whereupon Edwards explained to the officers that a 'freak' had placed the handcuffs upon him. When the officers and Edwards arrived at Apartment 213, Dahmer invited the trio inside and acknowledged he had indeed placed the handcuffs upon Edwards. In the bedroom, officer Rolf Mueller noted there was a large knife beneath the bed; he also saw an open drawer which, upon closer inspection, contained scores of Polaroid pictures - many of which were of human bodies in various stages of dismemberment. Mueller noted the decor indicated they had been taken in the very apartment in which they were standing. He walked into the living room to show them to his partner, uttering the words, "These are for real."

During a live video-performance by artist Brock Enright the audience was encouraged to react to notes he wrote before a camera from his New York bathroom. He smeared ketchup all over himself and tried to provoke some violence from the audience. After a while I stepped in front of the camera and told him I wanted real blood. He kept provoking and wrote “I’m scared”. I took a shard of glass from the floor and cut my chest until blood streamed down, put my shirt back on and left.

Serial killer Egidius Leo Schiffer aka Der Würger von Aachen dies of an autoerotic fatality at the age of 62 in Justizvollzugsanstalt, Bochum, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

"Schiffer removed a cable from his bedside table lamp, then wound it around his nipples and his penis and stuck the end in a power socket," said Bochum prison spokeswoman Candida Tunkel. Schiffer was still plugged into the device after he was discovered by guards. A post-mortem evaluation determined that Schiffer died as a result of heart failure caused by the electricity coursing through his body.
