McKinley died eight days later on 14 September of gangrene caused by the gunshot wounds. "It was in my heart, there was no escape for me. I could not have conquered it had my life been at stake. There were thousands of people in town on Tuesday. I heard it was President's Day. All those people seemed bowing to the great ruler. I made up my mind to kill that ruler."

Sculptor Alexander 'Sandy' Calder is born in Lawnton, Pennsylvania, United States. Calder's actual birthday remains a source of much confusion. According to Calder's mother he was born on 22 August yet his birth certificate at Philadelphia City Hall stated 22 July. When Calder's family learned about the birth certificate they reasserted with certainty that city officials had made a mistake.
