During Romero's funeral ceremony smoke bombs exploded on the streets near the cathedral and subsequently there were rifle shots that came from surrounding buildings. Many people were killed by gunfire and in the stampede of people running away from the explosions and gunfire; official sources reported 31 overall casualties while journalists recorded that between 30 and 50 died.

Innocent murderer Aleksandr Kravchenko is executed by the firing squad at the age of 29 in Rostov, Rostov Oblast, Russia. Kravchenko was sentenced to death for the murder of 10-year-old Yelena Zakotnova on 22 December 1978, who was actually killed by Andrei Chikatilo aka The Rostow Ripper as his first victim.
