North Korean leader Kim Jong-il passed through the station several hours before the explosion as he returned from a meeting in China. It was suggested that the explosion might have been an assassination attempt, but South Korean intelligence services believed that it was an accident. The Red Cross reported that 1.850 houses and buildings had been destroyed and another 6.350 had been damaged.

Jan Susan Whitney is abducted and strangled by foot fetishist and serial killer Jerry Brudos aka The Lust Killer at the age of 23 in 3123 Center Street, Salem, Oregon, United States.

Whitney's body was kept hanging from the pulley in Brudos' garage for several days, during which he dressed, photographed and had sex with it. Brudos cut off one of her breasts and made a resin mold of it that he used as a paperweight.
