On 3 April 1974 Hearst announced on an audiotape that she had joined the SLA and assumed the name 'Tania'.

Jan Susan Whitney is abducted and strangled by foot fetishist and serial killer Jerry Brudos aka The Lust Killer at the age of 23 in 3123 Center Street, Salem, Oregon, United States.

Whitney's body was kept hanging from the pulley in Brudos' garage for several days, during which he dressed, photographed and had sex with it. Brudos cut off one of her breasts and made a resin mold of it that he used as a paperweight.
