Shawcross was arrested the next day. Shawcross was sentenced to an indeterminate term at Attica with a maximum of 25 years. He was released on parole in April 1987. In March 1988 Shawcross began murdering again.

Interior minister Jack Straw decides to uphold the ruling made by his predecessor Michael Howard that 55-year-old serial killer Myra Hindley aka The Moors Murderers (with Ian Brady) would serve her life sentence or tariff in full and die in jail, in London, Greater London, United Kingdom. Hindley had requested a judicial review of her sentence.
