The fire was caused by pyrotechnics set off by 29-year-old tour manager Daniel Biechele of the evening's headlining band, Jack Russell's Great White, which ignited flammable sound insulation foam in the walls and ceilings surrounding the stage. Among those who perished in the fire were Great White's lead guitarist, Ty Longley and the show's emcee, DJ Mike 'The Doctor' Gonsalves. More than one survivor later stated that a bouncer stopped people trying to escape via the stage exit, stating that that door was "for the band only."

33-year-old mass murderer Fritz Angerstein shoots and stabs eight people including his wife, mother in law and several servants in Oranienstadt Dillenburg, Hessen, Germany. Angerstein then stabbed himself several times, causing severe but not life-threatening wounds and called for help. When help arrived Angerstein claimed he had been attacked by bandits, who had killed everyone in the house and left him for dead. The victims were his wife Käthe Angerstein, his mother-in-law Katharina Barth, his maidservant Minna Stoll, his 18-year-old sister-in-law Ella Barth, his bookkeeper Reinhold Diethardt, his clerk Heinrich Kiehl, his gardener Alex Geiß, and the gardener's assistant Rudi Darr.
