Goldstein threw a grenade into the Hall of Isaac where some 800 Muslims were at prayer. Then he opened fire with an IMI Galil assault rifle killing 29 people and wounding another 125. As word of the incident spread throughout the occupied territories, confrontations broke out in which a further 20 Palestinians were killed and 120 injured. In the first 6 days following the massacre 21 Palestinians were killed by live ammunition.

Barbier-Ponthus was Paulin's first deadly victim. Earlier that day 91-year-old Germaine Petiot was beaten up in her apartment in Rue Lepic but survived.
