Sagawa had sex with Hartevelt's corpse but was unable to bite into her skin, so he left the apartment and purchased a butcher knife. Sagawa ate various parts of her body, eating most of her breasts and face, saving other parts in his refrigerator. He also took photographs of Hartevelt at each eating stage.
