All 40 of the terrorists were killed and up to 204 hostages died during the siege due to poisoning by gas pumped into the ventilation system during the rescue operation. The identity of the gas was never disclosed, although it is believed by some to have been a fentanyl derivative such as carfentanil.

DeLuca was picked up by Rifkin, rushed through sex with him and he asked her if she wanted to die and she said yes so he strangled her to death, she never fought back. He left her body at a rest stop outside Cornwall where she was found on 1 October.
