Bundy piled books and files in his bunk bed under a blanket to simulate his sleeping body and slipped into the crawlspace above his cell. He broke through the ceiling into the apartment of the chief jailer who was out for the evening with his wife, changed into street clothes from the jailer's closet and walked out the front door to freedom.
