After his death Satie's friends discovered an apartment replete with squalor and chaos. Among many other unsorted papers and miscellaneous items, it contained a large number of umbrellas and two grand pianos placed one on top of the other, the upper instrument used as storage for letters and parcels. Sunday 26th of March 1944 (-) — Black reverend Isaac Simmons is lynched by six white men. The men shot Simmons three times, cut out his tongue and told his son he had ten days to abandon the family property. The killers took possession of the land and an all-white jury later acquitted the only one of the six men to face trial for the murder.
