The truck overturned and an explosion occurred as villagers attempted to collect the fuel that was spilling from the overturned vehicle. One local resident was smoking a cigarette, a spark from which ignited the fuel. 196 people were injured. (2 July 2010)

Wednesday 29th of September 1982 (-) — Tylenol poisoning victim Mary Kellerman dies after taking a capsule of cyanide laced Extra-Strength Tylenol. 27-year-old Adam Janus of Arlington Heights died in the hospital later that day after ingesting Tylenol. His 25-year-old brother Stanley and 19-year-old sister-in-law Theresa later also died after taking Tylenol from the same bottle. Within the next few days 31-year-old Mary McFarland of Elmhurst, 35-year-old Paula Prince and 27-year-old and Mary Reiner all died in similar incidents. In addition to the five bottles that led to the victims' deaths three other contaminated bottles were later discovered. Hundreds of copycat attacks involving Tylenol and other products also took place around the United States immediately following the Chicago deaths.
