Kappler was diagnosed with terminal cancer. His wife and qualified nurse Anneliese carried him out in a large suitcase (he weighed about 47 kg at the time) and drove him straight to Germany in a red Fiat automobile. Six months after his escape Kappler died at home. (15 August 1977)

Friday 26th of April 1901 (-) — Outlaw and murderer Tom Ketchum is executed by hanging. Nobody in Clayton had any experience in conducting hangings, the rope was too long and since Ketchum had gained a significant amount of weight during his time in jail he was decapitated when he dropped through the trap door.
