There was a dollar and a deck of cards in his pocket, a bottle of 1931 Chianti beside him and the ashes of his dog Smash in the back. He was set for the afterlife. To the whine of bagpipes, the Packard, steered by his widow Nancy Reddin Kienholz, rolled like a funeral barge into the big hole."

Thursday 4th of July 1963 (-) — Spree killer Melvin Weaver is shot dead by Georgia Trooper Robert Benson.
Weaver escaped while under guard at Marianna Hospital in Florida and killed 3 people, including Deputy Sheriff Aaron Creel and Deputy Allen Fench on the way. His terrified 14-year-oid hostage Ricky Hale grabbed Weaver's pistol and shot him four more times as he slumped dying over the beginnings of a foxhole he was trying to dig.
