Conceived out of wedlock to a father who disappeared Bundy's mother, Eleanor Cowell, fled to the sanctuary of the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers. After his birth Bundy was brought up by his maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. He was raised for a while to think that they were his parents and his biological mother was his sister.
