al-Shehhi was the hijacker-pilot of United Airlines Flight 175 crashing the plane into the South Tower of the World Trade Center as part of the September 11 attacks. al-Shehhi was the youngest hijacker-pilot to participate in the attacks.

 458 Die in Mitsui Miike Coal Mine explosion in Mitsui Miike Coal Mine, Ōmuta, Kyushu, Japan. Eight-hundred thirty-nine others were injured by the blast or carbon monoxide poisoning.
