The SS Grandcamp's cargo of approximately 2.300 tons of ammonium nitrate detonated due to a fire and caused a subsequent chain-reaction of further fires and explosions in other ships and nearby oil-storage facilities. An additional 113 people were classified as missing, for no identifiable parts were ever found.

German ambassador in Paris Ernst Eduard vom Rath dies after being shot in the stomach two days earlier by 17-year-old jew Herschel Grynszpan at the age of 29 in Clinique de l'Alma, 166 Rue de l'Université, VIIe, Paris, Île-de-France, France. vom Rath's death was used as a pretext for Kristallnacht.
