Cuevas and two other inmates of Huntsville's Walls Unit sparked the nation's longest prison siege by taking 16 hostages on 24 July 24 1974. Accomplices Fred Gomez Carrasco and Rudolfo Dominguez along with hostages Julia Standley and Elizabeth Beseda were killed during a shootout 10 days later.

Over 250 Die in Hasrat Mulia ferry shipwreck in Strait of Macassar, Sulawesi, Sunda Islands, Indonesia. There were about 400 passengers onboard the vessel that was authorised to carry 60 people only.
