Writer, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister and transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau dies of tuberculosis at the age of 45 in Concord, Massachusetts, United States.

Thoreau's last words were "Now comes good sailing" followed by two lone words, "moose" and "Indian".
