Spree killer Melvin Allen Weaver is shot dead by Georgia Trooper Robert Benson at the age of 23 in Americus, Georgia, United States. Weaver escaped while under guard at Marianna Hospital in Florida and killed 3 people, including Deputy Sheriff Aaron Creel and Deputy Allen Fench on the way. His terrified 14-year-oid hostage Ricky Hale grabbed Weaver's pistol and shot him four more times as he slumped dying over the beginnings of a foxhole he was trying to dig.
