Thurmond and Holmes had kidnapped and killed Brooke Hart on 9 November but continued to send ransom notes to his family, owners of Harts Department Store. Governor James 'Sunny Jim' Rolph praised the action, stating that California had sent a message to future kidnappers and promised to pardon anyone involved in the lynching.

Carol Kyle is attacked and raped by serial killer Richard Ramirez aka The Night Stalker at the age of 41 in Burbank, California, United States.

Kyle survived. Ramirez simply told her that she looked 'pretty good' for her age and that he would let her live.
