Cuevas and two other inmates of Huntsville's Walls Unit sparked the nation's longest prison siege by taking 16 hostages on 24 July 24 1974. Accomplices Fred Gomez Carrasco and Rudolfo Dominguez along with hostages Julia Standley and Elizabeth Beseda were killed during a shootout 10 days later.

99 Die in Grand Trunk train plunge into a river in Belœil Bridge, Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada. Train conductor Thomas Finn and engineer William Burnie failed to acknowledge a stop signal and the train fell through an open swing bridge into the Richelieu River.
