Darwin had been missing after a trip on the North Sea on 21 March 2002 and declared dead. On 23 July 2008 John and his wife Anne Darwin were both convicted of fraud. John was sentenced to six years and three months in prison.

Kidnapper and murderer Richard Albert Loeb aka The Perfect Murderer is slashed to ribbons in the showers by Jimmie James E. Day at the age of 31 in Stateville Correctional Center, Crest Hill, Illinois, United States. Rumors suggested that Day had desired sexual favors from Loeb who refused him. Loeb's last words to his partner in crime Nathan Leopold were "I think I'm going to make it."
