The fire started when the band Gurizada Fandangueira ignited fireworks during their show. The high death toll was due to the lack of emergency exits (the only access in and out of the building was the front door) and the fact that the number of people inside exceeded the maximum capacity by hundreds.

Double murderer Ivan Cantu is executed by lethal injection at the age of 50 in Huntsville Prison, 815 12th Street, Huntsville, Texas, United States. Cantu was convicted and sentenced to death for the 2000 murders of his cousin and his cousin’s fiancée.
