Willingham was convicted and executed for the murder of his three young children 2-year-old Amber Louise and 1-year-old twins Karmon Diane and Kameron Marie by arson at the family home in Corsicana, Texas on 23 December 1991. Since his execution significant controversy has arisen over the interpretation of the evidence that was used to convict him of arson and murder.

Multiple child murderer Robert Anthony Bob Buell is executed by lethal injection at the age of 62 in Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, Lucasville, Ohio, United States. Buell's final meal request was for a single black unpitted olive. Buell was paying homage to to Victor Feguer, the last prisoner executed by the federal government until Timothy McVeigh. Feguer was hanged in 1963. His last meal was an olive with the pit still in it. Feguer told prison officials that he hoped an olive tree would sprout from his body – a sign of peace.
