Fromme stood a little more than an arm's length from Ford and pointed a M1911 pistol at him. Her gun failed to fire and no one was injured. Fromme spent 34 years in prison for her assassination attempt and was released on 14 August 2009 – two years and eight months after Ford's death.

35-year-old Actor and film director Charles Spencer Chaplin marries 16-year-old actress Lita Grey in Empalme, Sonora, Mexico.

Gray was pregnant, and as Chaplin could have been imprisoned for having sexual relations with a minor, they married in secret to avoid a scandal.
