Cuevas and two other inmates of Huntsville's Walls Unit sparked the nation's longest prison siege by taking 16 hostages on 24 July 24 1974. Accomplices Fred Gomez Carrasco and Rudolfo Dominguez along with hostages Julia Standley and Elizabeth Beseda were killed during a shootout 10 days later.

Rapist and murderer Kermit Smith is executed by lethal injection at the age of 38 in Raleigh State Prison, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Smith is one of only a few white criminals since 1976 to have been executed for murdering a black victim.
