Davidson met Thom at a hospital where she counseled alcoholics once a week. A police report called the two quite close. A county probation officer said that just prior to her murder Davidson had tried to sever her sporadic sexual relationship with Thom. Thom pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and was given a sentence of 17 years to life.

Artificial-heart patient Barney Clark dies of a stroke at the age of 62 in University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. Clark spent the last 112 days of his life in a hospital bed attached to the Jarvik 7, a 180 kgs console that pumped air in and out of the aluminum-and-plastic implant through a system of hoses. Clark was constantly plagued by infections, drifting into and out of consciousness, at several points asking to be allowed to die.
