Duty was to be the first US prisoner whose execution included the use of the sedative pentobarbital, commonly used to euthanise animals. Duty's last meal request was for a double cheeseburger with mayonnaise, a foot-long hot dog with cheese, mustard and onions, a cherry limeade, and a banana shake.

 Lutheran pastor Oskar Brüsewitz dies of of his severe burns due to his self-immolation on 18 August 1976 in front of his church at the age of 47 in Michaeliskirche, Michaeliskirchhof 9, Zeitz, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany. On the day of his protest suicide Brüsewitz carried pamphlets accusing the communists of repression. "Funkspruch an alle: Die Kirche in der DDR klagt den Kommunismus an! Wegen Unterdrückung in Schulen an Kindern und Jugendlichen." |
