Sutcliffe ran off when he saw the lights of a passing car, leaving Browne requiring brain surgery. Sutcliffe was not convicted of the attack but confessed in 1992. Browne later said that she had been charmed by Sutcliffe at first: "We had walked together for almost a mile – for about 30 minutes and I never once felt intimidated or in danger."

 Would-be assassin of Adolf Hitler Claus Philipp Maria Schenk von Stauffenberg is executed by the firing squad at the age of 37 in Bendlerblock, Tiergarten, Berlin, Berlin, Germany. Apart from von Stauffenberg, his aide 1st Lieutenant Werner von Haeften, General Friedrich Olbricht and Colonel Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim were also executed in the courtyard of the Bendlerblock, which was lit by the headlights of a truck. |
