When an attempt to swap Hearst for jailed SLA members failed, the SLA demanded that the captive's family distribute $70 worth of food to every needy Californian – an operation that would cost an estimated $400 million. On 3 April 1974 Hearst announced on an audiotape that she had joined the SLA and assumed the name 'Tania'.

Dagmar Klimek is thrown out of a train and then raped and stabbed to death by serial killer Heinrich Pommerenke aka The Beast of the Black Forest at the age of 21 in Ebringen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Pommerenke risked his own life by jumping after Klimek out of the riding train.
