During Romero's funeral ceremony smoke bombs exploded on the streets near the cathedral and subsequently there were rifle shots that came from surrounding buildings. Many people were killed by gunfire and in the stampede of people running away from the explosions and gunfire; official sources reported 31 overall casualties while journalists recorded that between 30 and 50 died.

 Việt Cộng National Liberation Front patriot Nguyễn Văn Trỗi is executed by the firing squad at the age of 24 in Chí Hòa Prison, Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City Metropolitan Area, Vietnam. Văn Trỗi tried to assassinate United States Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and future ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. who were visiting South Vietnam in May 1964. Văn Trỗi's last words were "I have committed no sin. It is the Americans who have sinned." |
