Strydom was sentenced to death but the South African government declared a moratorium on capital punishment in 1990. He was released in 1992. The square has since been renamed Lilian Ngoyi Square.

All 287 passengers and 14 crew on board the plane died from smoke inhalation after the aircraft made a successful emergency landing at Riyadh.
