The jury quickly found Charteris guilty. On 2 March, he was sentenced to death and held in Newgate Prison. On 10 April 1730 after a substantial campaign to pardon Charteris, joined by Anne Bond, King George II granted him a royal pardon.

 A B-52G bomber of the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command collides with a KC-135 tanker during mid-air refueling at 9.450 m, killing three of the seven crew members in Palomares, Andalucía, Spain. Of the four Mk28-type hydrogen bombs the B-52G carried, three were found on land. The non-nuclear explosives in two of the weapons detonated upon impact with the ground resulting in the contamination of a 2 km2 area by plutonium.
