Sutton was initially convicted of killing three people in 1979, including his grandmother Dorothy Sutton, his high school friend John Large and Charles Almon. He was sentenced to death for his involvement in the fatal stabbing of fellow inmate and child rapist Carl Estep at Morgan County Regional Correctional Facility in 1985.

83-year-old anti-war protester Alice Herz, originally Alice Strauß immolates herself in protest of the escalating Vietnam War in front of Federal Department Store, corner of Oakman and Grand River, Detroit, Michigan, United States. Herz was rescued by a motorist and his two sons who were driving by and saw her burning and put out the flames. She died of her injuries ten days later.
