Africa was killed along with five other adults and five children when the Philadelphia Police Department head of bomb disposal dropped a satchel containing a gel-based explosive from a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter on a fortified bunker occupied by members of MOVE. The resulting explosion started a fire that resulted in the destruction of 65 homes in the neighborhood.

32 Die in CAAC Hawker Siddeley HS-121 Trident 2E crash in Beijing, Hebei, China. The crash was caused by an unqualified pilot who stole and flew the airliner. Total fatalities were all 12 crew, 32 ground, and no passengers. Over 200 people working in a factory on the crash site were injured.
