Elsas had spent a marked 250 Gulden bill from ransom money for Gerrit Jan Heijn in liquor store Dirck III in the Kamperfoelieweg in Amsterdam and was later caught on camera. Elsas had shot Heijn dead on the day of the kidnapping, 9 September 1987.

Poet, playwright and theatre director Bertolt Eugen Friedrich Brecht dies of a heart attack at the age of 58 in Berlin, Berlin, Germany. In his will Brecht provided instructions that a stiletto be placed in his heart and that he be buried in a steel coffin so that his corpse could not be eaten by worms.
