Phoenix collapsed outside and convulsed for over five minutes. By the time paramedics had arrived on the scene Phoenix was turning dark blue in full cardiac arrest and in a flatline state. They administered medication in an attempt to restart his heart. He was rushed to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where further attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Triple murderer John Leslie Wheat is executed by lethal injection at the age of 57 in Huntsville Prison, 815 12th Street, Huntsville, Texas, United States. At his execution Wheat uttered a Vietnamese word that prison officials said means "let's get out of here."
