In January 1936 Damiaan's body was returned to Belgium. He was buried in Leuven. After his beatification in June 1995 the remains of his right hand were returned to Hawaii and re-interred in his original grave on Molokai.

 123 Die in Varig Flight 820 Boeing 707-320C fire in Saulx-les-Chartreux, Île-de-France, France. Problems began when a fire started in a rear lavatory. Prior to the forced landing many of the passengers had already died of carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation. A possible cause of the fire was that the lavatory waste bin contents caught fire after a lit cigarette was thrown into it. There were 11 survivors.
