Van Gogh supposedly gave it to Gabrielle Berlatier, a farmer’s daughter who worked as a maid at a brothel frequented by Van Gogh. He was found unconscious the next morning by a policeman and taken to hospital where Félix Rey, a young doctor still in training, treated him. The ear was delivered to the hospital but Rey did not attempt to reattach it as too much time had passed.

Writer Spalding Rockwell Gray commits suicide by drowning at the age of 63 in East River, New York City, New York, United States. It is believed that Gray jumped off the side of the Staten Island Ferry.
