Abstract expressionist painter Jackson Paul Pollock dies in a single-car crash in his Oldsmobile convertible while driving under the influence of alcohol at the age of 44 in Springs, New York, United States. Edith Metzger was also killed in the accident. Artist and Pollock's mistress Ruth Kligman survived.
