A popular belief is that Vélez was unable to face the shame of giving birth to a child out of wedlock. Eventual fathers of the unborn child were actors Harald Maresch, Arturo de Córdova and Gary Cooper.

Murderer Ernest L. Hoefgen is executed by hanging at the age of 31 in Lansing Correctional Facility, 301 E Kansas Avenue, Lansing, Kansas, United States. Hoefgen called for two chicken dinners and got both. He asked for peaches and cream with the noon meal and changed this dessert to ice cream for the evening meal.
