Problems began when a fire started in a rear lavatory. Prior to the forced landing many of the passengers had already died of carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation. A possible cause of the fire was that the lavatory waste bin contents caught fire after a lit cigarette was thrown into it. There were 11 survivors.

35-year-old Wiener Aktionist Hermann Nitsch performs his 41. Aktion in Schloss Prinzendorf, Schloss Straße 1, Prinzendorf an der Zaya, Niederösterreich, Austria. It was the opening event for Nitsch' Orgien Mysterien Theater and lasted for 12 hours.
