All 40 of the terrorists were killed and up to 204 hostages died during the siege due to poisoning by gas pumped into the ventilation system during the rescue operation. The identity of the gas was never disclosed, although it is believed by some to have been a fentanyl derivative such as carfentanil.

Boxer Jack John Arthur Johnson aka The Galveston Giant dies in a car crash at the age of 68 in U.S. Highway 1, Franklinton, North Carolina, United States. Johnson crashed into a telephone pole after racing angrily from a diner that refused to serve him.
