Physicist and mathematician André-Marie Ampère dies of unknown causes at the age of 61 in Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France. On his deathbed Ampère ordered that an inscription be placed upon his tombstone: Tandem Felix (Happy at Last).
