Passengers, including many gold miners were killed by being dashed against the rocks by the waves rather than drowned. Others drowned weighed down by the belts of gold they were wearing around their bodies. The survivors, 21 passengers and 18 crew members were all men, with no women or children saved.

Suicide pilot Richard Rick Russell aka Beeboo commits suicide by an airplane crash at the age of 29 in Ketron Island, Washington, United States. Russell stole a Horizon Air Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport and made a barrel roll over Puget Sound amongst other maneuvers before fatally crashing. In a recorded conversation with Air Control Russel talked about himself as "Just a broken guy, got a few screws loose, I guess."
