The fire ignited as a result of a faulty liquid propane gas cylinder in a ground floor buffet of the hotel. 17-year-old kitchen helper Khayan Kasien had identified a faulty valve assembly on gas cylinder in a ground-floor buffet, while attempting to shut off the valve, he inadvertently increased the flow of gas and caused an explosion.

Journalist and writer Arthur Koestler born as Kösztler Artúr commits suicide by an overdose of Tuinal barbiturates taken with alcohol at the age of 78 in 8 Montpelier Square, Kensington, London, Greater London, United States. Koestler's 55-year-old wife Cynthia Jefferies joined him in death.
