    17-year-old male prostitute Giuseppe Pelosi was arrested and confessed to murdering Pasolini. On 7 May 2005 he retracted his confession which he said was made under the threat of violence to his family. He claimed that three people "with a southern accent" had committed the murder, insulting Pasolini as a "dirty communist".

    Gangster Jacques René Mesrine aka Public Enemy No. 1 is shot dead by the gendarmerie at the age of 43 in Porte de Clignancourt, Paris, XVIIIe, Île-de-France, France.

    Mesrine's golden BMW 520 was boxed in at the entrance to the intersection and police marksmen in the rear of a lorry immediately in front of their car threw open a tarpaulin. Twenty rounds were fired at point blank range. Mesrine was hit 15 times. A coup de grâce was then administered with a pistol. His mistress Sylvia Jeanjacquot lost one eye and suffered lasting damage to her arm. Her pet dog was killed.

    Film director Theo Theodoor van Gogh is assassinated by Dutch-Moroccan Muslim Mohammed Bouyeri at the age of 47 in .

    Bouyeri objected to the controversial film Submission van Gogh made from a script written by Ayaan Hirsi Ali that deals with violence against women in some Islamic societies; it tells the stories of four abused Muslim women using visual shock tactics. Following the broadcast of the film both van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received death threats. Van Gogh did not take the threats seriously and refused any protection. According to Hirsi Ali he said "Nobody kills the village idiot", a term he frequently used about himself.
